Summer Programs for Children

Seating at most programs is first-come, first-served, except for groups of 10 or more, who must register in advance by calling 367-8710. Workshops are limited in size and all participants must register in advance to attend.

Summer Tutoring Program
Struggling readers who have completed first, second, third, fourth, or fifth grade can receive eight hours of reading instruction with trained reading tutors. Registration is required and begins May 5, 2008. For registration information, call 367-8710. Summer tutoring is funded through a grant from Dollar General.

Oak View: Tutoring at the Oak View Branch will be held on Monday and Thursday mornings, June 2 through 26, from 10 to 11 a.m. or from 11 a.m. to 12 noon.

Ronning: Tutoring at the Ronning Branch will be held on Monday and Wednesday mornings, July 7 through 30, from 10 to 11 a.m. or 11 a.m. to 12 noon.



Bug Songs
Songwriter and musician Tom Cornwell will kick off the summer reading club with his funny and creative songs about insects. Registration for groups of 10 or more begins May 14 at 8:45 a.m.

The Water Spout Puppet Show
The neighborhood will never be the same after a spider comes to live in a busy rain gutter. Seating is first-come, first-served, for these performances for children three years old and up, except for groups of ten or more, who must preregister to attend by calling 367-8710. Group registration will begin on May 19th.

Preschool Storytime
This weekly storytime features stories, songs, fingergames, and films for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds. Preschool Storytime will be hold at 10:05 and 10:45 a.m. at all locations. The 10:05 program is not available to groups of ten or more.

Bitten by the Magic Bug
Magician Chris Collins will present a fun-filled magic show for the whole family. Registration for groups of 10 or more begins May 27 at 8:45 a.m.

Six-Legged Wonders
Sertoma Butterfly House Education Coordinator Annie Rezac and her sidekick, Cecil the Caterpillar, will introduce elementary school-aged kids to the wonders of butterflies and insects. Registration for groups of 10 or more begins June 2 at 8:45 a.m.

Buggy Balloon Show
Children’s performing artist Mr. Twister will delight you with his new balloon show featuring Super Flea, the world’s only insect daredevil. Registration for groups of 10 or more begins June 9 at 8:45 a.m.

Ugly Bug Craft
Use the ingredients we have on hand to create your own Ugly Bug at this drop-in, make-it-and-take-it workshop for the whole family. Groups of 10 or more should call in advance to schedule a start time. Registration for groups of 10 or more begins June 16 at 8:45 a.m.

Double Play Concert
The world’s only flute-and-tuba duo will perform a lively kids’ concert featuring tunes to make you buggy. Registration for groups of 10 or more begins June 23 at 8:45 a.m.

Puppet Show: A Very Fishy Tale
A young boy goes fishing and makes the mistake of using a bookworm for bait. Registration for groups of 10 or more begins June 30 at 8:45 a.m.

Fingerprint Bug Art Workshop
Use your own fingerprints to create all kinds of bugs. This hourlong workshop is for children who have completed second grade and up. Registration is required and begins July 7 at 8:45 a.m. Limit 20 participants per session.

Bug Games Workshop

Lapsit
. . . is a language enrichment program of rhymes and songs and finger plays for children 6 months to 24 months old to attend with their parents or caregivers. Lapsit is held at 10:05 a.m.

Crafty Kids
… is a story and craft activity for elementary school students. Each program will last one hour and feature stories along with a make-it-and-take-it craft. The program will be for children in grades K through 5.

Toddlertime
. . . is a weekly 30-minute program of stories, songs, and finger games for 2-year-olds and their parents or caregivers to attend together.

Preschool Storytime
